Kenneth Shuler Difference Maker Scholarship

The Optimist Club of St. Andrews-Irmo established the Kenneth Shuler Difference Maker Scholarship in 2024 to honor one of our founding members, Kenneth Shuler, and his contributions to the youth in Irmo over the last 54 years. The purpose is to support local students who are currently zoned for Lexington/Richland School District 5 schools pursuing vocational or technical training at an accredited trade school to advance their skills in a skilled trade or technical field. Students who reside in the Lexington/Richland School District 5, students who are homeschooled or students who attend a charter school are eligible to apply.

Criteria for the Kenneth Shuler Difference Maker Scholarship to be awarded by the Optimist Club of St. Andrews-Irmo.

Purpose:

To support local students who are currently zoned for Lexington/Richland School District 5 schools pursuing vocational or technical training at an accredited trade school to advance their skills in a skilled trade or technical field. Students who reside in the Lexington/Richland School District 5, students who are homeschooled or students who attend a charter school are eligible to apply.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Residency: Applicant must reside in Richland or Lexington Counties, SC, and reside within Lexington/Richland School District 5.
  2. Enrollment Status: Applicant must be accepted to or currently enrolled in a vocational, technical, or trade school program for a specific trade (e.g., automotive technology, welding, plumbing, electrical, cosmetology, etc.).
  3. Academic Performance: A minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 5.0 scale) in high school or their current program is required.
  4. Community Involvement: Demonstrated commitment to community service or civic involvement through volunteer work or community projects.

Application Requirements:

  1. Completed Application Form
  2. Personal Video: A video detailing the applicant’s career goals, why they chose their trade, and how they plan to use their skills to benefit the community. A list of questions will be provided on the application. This video should be no more than 3 minutes.
  3. Letter of Recommendation: At least one letter from a teacher, mentor, or employer familiar with the applicant’s dedication to their trade or community.
  4. Proof of Enrollment/Acceptance: A letter or document showing acceptance to or enrollment in a trade school program.
  5. Transcript: A copy of the applicant’s high school transcript or current school transcript, if applicable.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Commitment to Career Goals: Clear dedication to their chosen trade and realistic plans for future career development.
  2. Community Spirit: Evidence of a commitment to contributing to the local community, either through volunteer work, civic projects, or future aspirations in their field.
  3. Personal Character and Potential for Success: Based on references, personal video, and achievements.

Award Amount:

  • Three $1000 scholarships will be awarded in 2025 for the 25/26 school year to be used toward tuition, tools, books, or other expenses related to the trade school program. The check will be written to the institution and not the recipient.

Deadline:

  • Applications must be submitted by March 21, 2025 and will be awarded on May 16, 2025.
